Last week, we hit the road with Kawerau Blue Light for what has become one of our favourite <\/span>Give More<\/span><\/strong> days of the year \u2013 taking a group of local rangatahi to the snow.<\/span><\/p>\n

There was plenty of excitement, a few challenges, a lot of laughs and, for some, the chance to experience something completely new.<\/span><\/p>\n

But as awesome as a day on the mountain is, it’s what sits behind these trips that really matters.<\/span><\/p>\n

Around 40% of Kawerau’s population is under the age of 24. We’re a young community, and the opportunities and experiences available to our rangatahi can play a big part in shaping what they see as possible.<\/span><\/p>\n

Blue Light<\/span><\/strong> has been working alongside young people across New Zealand for more than 40 years, creating positive experiences and relationships through activities, life-skills camps, leadership programmes and mentoring.<\/span><\/p>\n

A trip to the snow is definitely the fun end of that work, but there’s something pretty cool about seeing young people go somewhere they haven’t been, try something they haven’t tried and realise they’re capable of something new.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sometimes that’s skiing down a mountain. Other times it might be getting a driver’s licence, taking on a leadership role or finding a path into work.<\/span><\/p>\n

The young people growing up in Kawerau today will become the parents, workmates, business owners and community leaders of tomorrow. Giving them opportunities to experience something new, meet good people and see a little more of what’s possible can only be a good thing.<\/span><\/p>\n

One day in the snow is only one experience. But alongside all the other work Blue Light does with our rangatahi, those experiences add up.<\/span><\/p>\n
