Sequal Lumber steps closer to becoming world class lumber mill.

Sequal Lumber implements Lean Manufacturing Principles

Since its inception in 2006 Sequal Lumber has been working towards becoming a world class wood processing business.

CEO David Turner says implementing Lean is a major milestone in the process.

“Whilst we already have an efficient business mindset, adding clear Lean process and culture to our business is important for our future. Lean will help us to continue to add real value to our customers, our staff and our community whilst also enhancing the position of our shareholders.”

Sequal’s journey with Lean is relatively new, beginning in Oct 2013. Since then they have worked with Lean consultants Intent, to start to embed the overarching practices and principles throughout the organisation.

“We have some big goals at Sequal. One of these is to help our customers make better more profitable products. Lean will help us do this, whilst also focusing us on company culture, continuous improvement and our responsibility to our local community.”

Anybody who has implemented Lean knows that a company doesn’t become Lean overnight. CEO David Turner is confident that Lean will help Sequal reach its goals and drive business success.

“We are not a traditional lumber company, in-fact only one of our current management team has worked for a lumber mill prior to joining Sequal. That’s giving us excellent competitive advantage.

Traditionally lumber mills haven’t been highly focused on giving their customers exactly what they need. Often supplying lumber that’s too wide or too tall or too long and relying on customers to accept this waste.

We believe we have a responsibility to our customers, shareholders and the environment to reduce this type of waste in the supply chain. We are expecting that Lean will help us to do this and operate at truly world class levels.”
